About Garden District

After the Louisiana Purchase, the Garden District was one of the first neighborhoods to be developed. The name for the area of New Orleans comes from the beautiful, large gardens found throughout. The Garden District is found near the Central Business District and it borders Uptown, as well.

Today, the Garden District is most-known for the amazing historic mansions. Many southern-style mansions with incredible architecture are found throughout the area. This neighborhood shows off Victorian, Italianate and Classic Greek Revival styles and attracts many visitors every single year.

Real Estate in the Garden District

Along with the many historic mansions, the real estate in the Garden District includes many single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Some of the old mansions have been turned into condominium buildings, while other condos are found in midrise buildings throughout the area.

Prices for homes and condos throughout the neighborhood vary quite a bit. Condos may be priced under $200K, while many single-family homes and condos start ad more than $400K and can go up into the millions. With a wide variety of properties and prices, the Garden District tends to attract a diverse group of homebuyers.

Shopping, Dining & Entertainment

While the Garden District of New Orleans is certainly known for the large, historic mansions, it's also known for the shopping on Magazine Street. This section of the neighborhood is known as the commercial center. You'll find a number of antique shops, design studios, clothing store and so much more throughout this section of the neighborhood.

In addition, many great restaurants are found throughout. Even a unique barbershop is found here, which offers both Guinness and whiskey with a hot towel shave. Whether you're visiting or living here, going to Joey K's Bar and Restaurant should be high on your list. You'll also find many other great places to dine in restaurant row on Magazine Street.

Along with the shopping and dining, the Garden District offers some entertainment options. Many annual events are held in the area and some of the venues found along Magazine Street offer other entertainment option. The neighborhood is also home to Commander's Palace, District Donuts Sliders & Brews, Lafayette Cemetery #1 and Buckner Mansion.

The Parks & Squares

One of the unique things about the Garden District is the many parks and square found throughout. Smaller parks are all over this area with plenty to offer. Coliseum Square is one of the top choices with plenty of large oak trees and space to enjoy. In addition, the neighborhood is home to a number of gardens, which provide incredible scenery.

Living in the Garden District

Those looking for a more peaceful style of living will enjoy the Garden District. Plenty of housing options are found throughout the neighborhood ranging from mansions to condominiums. It's a very desirable location close to Uptown and many other popular areas of New Orleans, as well.

A prime location with plenty of history, beautiful gardens and so much to offer, the Garden District is often high on the list of homebuyers relocating from another city. Living in the Garden District allows residents the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful style of live with many great shopping, dining and entertainment options just a short walk or drive away.
