The neighborhood was laid out in the early 1800s by Bernard de Marigny, a Creole aristocrat who subdivided his family’s plantation as the city grew. Elysian Fields Avenue was its main street and the first in New Orleans to run all the way to Lake Pontchartrain. Today the Marigny is known as funky, artsy, and unapologetically local.
